Staithes

Bay Tree Cottage is located in the traditional old fishing village of Staithes which is in easy reach of Whitby, Sandsend, Runswick Bay and North Yorkshire Moors National Park. With an abundance of walks on beach or moor it is ideal for "mind blowing" days in some of Britains most beautiful countryside and coastline.

Renowned for its traditional cottages and small "nooks and crannies", Staithes history goes back hundreds of years. Captain James Cook lived and worked in Staithes in a cottage just 20 feet away from the Cottage and locally there is trail following most of early life including Whitby where he famously sailed off on his exploratory travels.

Fishing and smuggling formed a greater part of the village history and today secret alleys and caves leading to the harbour are still found in process of renovation and modernisation taking place in the village. With a sympathetic National Park restriction in place all development is positive and in keeping with tradition - minimal flat roofs, no flats "stuck on house roof's" - Staithes is as traditional as it comes.

Antique shops and Boutiques the village is as interesting now as it was 200 years ago.

Staithes has 3 pubs within 5 minute walk of the Cottage. The Cod and Lobster - good traditional pub with open fires and spectacular views of the harbour. Beer only - no food - a proper pub. The Royal George - good traditional pub, small on the outside but excellent pint for the real ale lovers. The George also does a range of affordable bar food ideal after along walk or to save any cooking. The Black Lion - traditional village pub with lots of character to while away rainy days.
